    Radial distribution of the inner magnetosphere plasma pressure using low-altitude satellite data during geomagnetic storm: the March 1-8, 1982 Event

    Plasma pressure distribution in the inner magnetosphere is one of the key parameters for understanding the main magnetospheric processes including geomagnetic storms and substorms. However, the pressure profiles obtained from in-situ particle measurements by the high-altitude satellites do not allow tracking the pressure variations related to the storms and substorms, because a time interval needed to do this generally exceeds the characteristic times of them. On contrary, fast movement of low-altitude satellites makes it possible to retrieve quasi-instantaneous profiles of plasma pressure along the satellite trajectory, using the fluxes of precipitating particles. For this study, we used the Aureol-3 satellite data for plasma pressure estimation, and the IGRF, Tsyganenko 2001 and Tsyganenko 2004 storm time geomagnetic field models for the pressure mapping into the equatorial plane. It was found that during quiet geomagnetic condition the radial pressure profiles obtained coincide with the profiles, obtained previously from the high-altitude measurements. On the contrary, it was found that during geomagnetic storm the plasma pressure profiles became sharper; the position of the maximum of plasma pressure corresponds to expected one for given Dst minimum; the maximum value of inner magnetosphere static pressure correlates with the solar wind dynamic pressure. Increase in the plasma pressure profiles indicates the possibility to consider the interchange instability as one of important factors for the development of the main phase of geomagnetic storm.Comment: Accepted in Advances in Space Researc

    Electric-field induced shape transition of nematic tactoids

    The occurrence of new textures of liquid crystals is an important factor in tuning their optical and photonics properties. Here, we show, both experimentally and by numerical computation, that under an electric field chitin tactoids (i.e. nematic droplets) can stretch to aspect ratios of more than 15, leading to a transition from a spindle-like to a cigar-like shape. We argue that the large extensions occur because the elastic contribution to the free energy is dominated by the anchoring. We demonstrate that the elongation involves hydrodynamic flow and is reversible, the tactoids return to their original shapes upon removing the field.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Flipped classroom in the higher education system: A pilot study in Finland and Russia

    This article shows specifics of the transition from conventional educational practice to the Flipped classroom model in modern education system. It is focused on professors’ perception of the video-based teaching approach. Conducted sociological survey involves the teaching staff from one European and one Russian university, namely the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and Ural Federal University (URFU). The survey investigated professors’ awareness of the Inverted classroom, their readiness to employ it and prime barriers they face. Results reveal that teachers from Russia have less information about the model and practically do not embed it in the education arrangement comparing to professors from Finland. Lack of time, lack of support and assistance are shown to be the prime barriers preventing them from flipped classroom implementation. Drawn implications are of use for the integration of the flipped classroom. © 2017, Adam Marszalek Publishing House. All rights reserved

    © MCSER-Mediterranean Center of Social and Educational Research. The current economic growth rate in the Republic of Tatarstan cannot serve as the only progress and welfare index of the region. This can be due to the fact that the continual economic growth of public welfare caused a number of adverse effects, such as environmental disorder, social strain intensification, etc. that is why it is necessary to reinforce another measure of our further well-being. This article specificates a particular criterion, forming part of the integral “life quality” rate, i.e. the expected life expectancy at birth. To complete this task a profound scientific research at a regional level is required. This article presents results of an analysis of life expectancy rate at birth as a way to evaluate life quality in the Republic of Tatarstan. The research results show that there is a territorial and gender disparity. The authors make this fact conditional on job distinctive features, unhealthy lifestyle, carelessness which leads to disregard one’s own health. So, they suggest including this rate as an indicative one while assessing the heads of the Republic of Tatarstan municipal units. This research aims to assess life quality from the perspective of life expectancy at birth. This work presents a monitoring of expected lifespan for the Republic of Tatarstan population as compared to other regions of the Volga Region Federal District. It also considers the situation within the republic at a municipal level. Practical implementation of the recommendations drawn up in the course of the research will promote development of a reasonable regional programme to maintain and improve public welfare. This research is based on traditional methods: cartographical (methodologically founded on subject and complex mapping and advances in geoinformation technologies), comparative and descriptive, spatial analysis method and the statistical one.     In experiment on white rats-males of Vistar line in weight of 200–250 g simulated a 30-minute ischemia/reperfusion of distal part of small intestine, investigated a condition of monooxygenase and reductase chains of microsome of hepatocytes endoplasmic reticulum. Decrease of all studied parameters microsomal oxidations in early terms investigation (72 hour), against the intensity growth of lipid peroxidation testifies about malfunction of detoxication liver functions. Preliminary abdominal introduction of glucoproteides a-globulin fraction of human serumand carnitine to modeling ischemia/reperfusion of the small intestine protect cytochromes P-450 and b5 from oxidative damage, support the active functioning of the electron transport chain, contributing to improved energy cells by reducing the rate of lipid peroxidation and changes in endogenous respiration rate.В експерименті на білих щурах-самцях лінії Вістар масою 200–250 г, у яких моделювали 30-хвилинну ішемію/реперфузію дистального відділу тонкої кишки, досліджували стан монооксигеназного та редуктазного ланцюгів мікросом ЕПР гепатоцитів. Зниження всіх показників мікросомального окиснення, що досліджувались, в ранні терміни (72 год) на тлі зростання інтенсивності перекисного окиснення ліпідів свідчить про порушення функції детоксикації печінки. Внутрішньочеревне введення глюкопротеїду a-глобулінової фракції сироватки крові людини і карнітину до моделювання ішемії/репефузії тонкої кишки захищають цитохроми Р-450 і b5 від окиснювального пошкодження, підтримує активне функціонування ланцюга електронного транспорту, сприяючи поліпшенню енергозабезпечення клітин за рахунок зниження швидкості перекисного окиснення ліпідів та зміни швидкості ендогенного дихання

    Planning walkable cities:Generative design approach towards digital twin implementation

    The idea of a walkable city refers to the extent to which the built environment encourages people to walk by establishing comfortable pedestrian routes, which allows people to connect to numerous services with reasonable effort and time. Walkability is currently regarded as a “good to know about” rather than a “must-have” factor for sustainable development. A combination of walkability with a standard design strategy, such as generative design, may result in a more efficient way of planning a walkable city. Interestingly, the sole indicator taken into account for walkability in the generative design domain is “distance to amenities”, while in reality, other parameters, such as the comfort factor, could also influence walkability. Therefore, in this research, we developed a workflow based on the generative design, which considers the comfort dimension in combination with distance to amenities and street-level greeneries. We also included the human perspective, given that walkability is always personal. This research successfully generated three different scenarios of walkability-optimal urban plans, where the highest walkability is 82.43 (very walkable). Furthermore, the baseline scenario of two different locations also aligns with people’s perspectives when compared. In addition, we found that the inclusion of a temporal dimension, enhanced 3D-related indicators, and constraints should benefit future research
